At Toorak Fine Dentistry, our Principal Dentist Dr Andrew Gronow is highly skilled in the orthodontic
treatment of early dental problems. We offer orthodontic and orthopaedic removable appliances, more commonly known as a plate, for the correction of bite problems such as an overbite, deep bite, crossbite, narrow jaws, harmful habits, crowded teeth, or severely protruded teeth. The plates may be coloured or have sparkles and we have many patterns for your child to choose from.
Removable Plate Therapy harnesses the natural growth of your child to correct early dental
problems. At Toorak Fine Dentistry, we’re fully equipped with an OPG and CBCT machine, meaning that we can take the required x-rays on the day to assess crowding, predict growth patterns and check airway patency. From this diagnostic information, we will tailor a treatment plan specifically for your child with a custom designed removable orthopaedic appliance.
We will inspect the plate monthly and provide adjustments. This allows us to modify the plate as the teeth move and your child grows. There are many benefits to a removable plate, and in some cases the use of a plate can help to avoid braces.
For certain cases, the plate is the first part of two phases – this is typically for our child and adolescent patients with more involved orthodontic requirements. The first phase is the removable plate to manage early dental issues as described above. Once this treatment is completed and all the permanent teeth have erupted, some children and adolescents may require braces as part of a second phase to align the upper and lower teeth in the dental arch. We often refer to this as ‘finishing braces’, as the treatment is much shorter than traditional braces treatment thanks to the removable plate. Finishing braces in this instance is therefore used to improve the aesthetic alignment of the teeth.
